Liquid Ice

Liquid Ice

Liquid ice drips from the sky
clear coating branch and limb
reflected in security light
darkness snuffing rays quickly

Eerie hush as hear ice fall upon old snow
layer upon layer builds in geological time
until covered completely in snowy ash
waiting to swallow next victim of fall

Fallen warriors strewn about
generations of warriors taken down
scheme repeats amidst the carcasses
stench of generations wasted

Withdrawn into shells of former self
shame's unholy hush
hides the wound
avoids mentioning the fall

Yet dooming another generation
to repeat the fall that shouldn't be
as pride rises up  humility flees
damning the sons to familiar fall

So I choose to break free
vulnerable about the fall
disrupts the scheme
so sons and daughters can go beyond

To fight their own battles
because I have fought my own
not wallowing in what could have been
nor a victim of others

Poem 19-333w

A somber write about old trees that have fallen likened to unfinished family business passed from one generation to the next. It has to stop somewhere, with me.

Yesterdays

Yesterdays

Sorrow of yesterdays
a veil of inky fog
leaves a moist icing
upon the psyche

Until remember hope
breaks the dawn brilliantly
spills golden rays as
stone rolled away

Tomb emptied
waking up in
love's cottony embrace
redemption's power

Redemption

Redemption

Redemption is the story
God's grace wraps 'round
You are my beloved
Reclaim your beauty from all the ashes
Redemption for the desires of your heart

Faithful

Faithful (18-208B)

Freeze and thaw
breaking the mind
Smooth words seep
into fractured places

Bitter ale
becomes sweet
Slowly poising heart
one day at a time

Trauma clouds vision
blind to truth of moment
Shatters identity
new normal

Awake abruptly
from living nightmare
Hope's spark
freedom painfully comes

Responsibility for responses
humbly admit harm caused
How response damaged
most precious relationship

In trauma's wake
healing fragmented self
Healing harmed relationships
grace encountered

Journey of years
seeking help
Finally experiencing fruit
beauty of redemption story

Through it all discover
depth of Father's love
His mercy and kindness
overwhelm me

He never forsook me
He walked with me
In midst of brokenness
He comforted me

Doodled

Doodled (18-005A)

He doodled in the dirt
in the very dust came from
Exposing the heart of Man
accusers walk away

Hearts of stone
tablet etched by finger of God
Restored hearts of flesh
Father's mercy demonstrated

All end up at feet of Jesus
repent
Transformation in a moment
internal temple holy and pure

Red Bricks

Red Bricks (18-069B)

Walled off heart
A brick for each micro-trauma
Foundation of rejection and shame

Hand withdrawn
Touch withheld
Another brick mortared

Uncontrolled rage
Unsafe memories etched
Another brick set

Trained to filter
Through fear, trauma, abuse
More bricks

World askew
Can't feel - joy or pain
Bricks secure around heart

Prisoner in cell
Personally built
Only see red bricks now

Heart shipwrecked
Until that day
Brick wall cracks

Bricks shaken
At foundation
Hope awakens

Wall pushed down
No more frown
Bricks 'n rubble all around

Liberation comes
Joy's a crown
Heart found

Bricks redeemed
New name written
Transformed to altar

Offer up sacrifice
Of praise for deliverance
Upon what had bound

Reclaimed what imprisoned
No more sorrow or shame
Bricks have a new name

Frail Hands

Frail Hand (16-151Z)

sit quietly beside
holding frail hand
in his waning presence abide
days are numbered in this land

finally found a peace
can just rest side by side
Fall season changing leaf
acceptance finally resides

not to the swift
presented many choices
each moment a gift
finally room for inner voice

waxing of season
suddenly life found
place beyond reason
in waning days life abounds

Memories of my father-in-law.

Hardscrabble

     Hardscrabble

Eyes from past
Pierce from pictures
Black and white memories
Of time long ago

Hardscrabble images
Sad eyes of hope dashed
Angry eyes of control
Stare into my soul

Ill-fitting clothes
Hang upon skeleton frames
Lost eyes of children
Carrying weight not theirs

Repetition of generations
Whirlpool of cycles
Vortex perpetually repeats
Sins of fathers

Other images tell
Different stories
Solidness of character
Eyes of hope, orphans no more

Image of grandfather as a child and his family. His father died and the children ended up in an orphanage and torn apart. Impact of trauma that can be broken free from, new choices.

Greater Than

     Greater Than

His love is greater than
All my sin and shame
All sorrow and pain

His love is freely given
Always offered
Often refused

His love is redemptive
Washes me clean
Resores my place in Him

His love
Beyond understanding
Heals the mind and heart

His love
Mixed with mercy
Full of grace

His love
Hope to the hopeless
Life to the dieing

Phases

Suzie Q and Mattie
                Phases

Quietness with foal gone
Feed five flakes of hay to stallion
No commotion in the early morning moonlight
Barn silent as mare and foal leave empty space

Change of seasons accelerate
In one weekend three horses leave
Nine easy keepers left
Hush falls on property

Land notices the difference
No longer enough horses to keep fields down
Plump horses waddle
Angry they are locked out of fields during the day

Preparations for next phase of journey
As our nest becomes smaller
Soon another child stretches her wings
And just few more years with our youngest

Positioning and realigning
Our best days begin today
Today is the day of redemption
Now is the time to redeem

Hole in Soul

    Hole in Soul

            -i-

A hole in the soul

External can't fill

Numbing attempts to be whole

Can't be still

           -ii-

A hole in the soul

Leaking life

Thoughts roll

Internal strife

          -iii-

A hole in the soul

Longing to be free

Heart's desire to be full

Hoping to see

           -iv-

A hole in the soul

What can it mean

Innocence stole

Ache to be clean

            -v-

A hole in the soul

Damage of sin

Absolution's gravitational pull

Toxic poison within

           -vi-

A hole in the soul

A journey to take

A hole in the soul

A life to embrace

          -vii-

A hole in the soul

Redemption

Soul is whole

Soul is whole

Re-Cover

      Re-Cover

Ripped and torn
Used and time worn
Needs re-covered

Sin damaged and stained
Doesn't have to remain
Need re-covered

Shame has a fabric
Bound in black
Still need re-covered

Exposed and bare
Broken in despair
Still need re-covered

Vulnerable and humble
Love washed clean
Re-covered, re-deemed

Stains Deep

       Stains Deep

Stains so deep
Marking strands of DNA
Seared into memory
Automatic body response

Washed clean in His blood
Jesus paid it all
No need to double pay
Scrubbing clean deep stain

What once was, no more
Redeemed and claimed
No longer stained
Cleansed by the blood of the Lamb

Pressing Through

Pressing Through

Pressing through
Into You
What has been
Free of sin

Letting go
Ever so slow
Setting free
Hear my plea

Wind Blows

        Wind Blows

Wind blows and snow dances
Covering tracks of past
Pure white, clean

As though never disturbed

Fading

                   Fading

Strength of a generation fading
Memory and legacy dwindling
Soon to slip silently into the night
Just a wisp remains of what was

Carried on through children
Willingly or unwillingly
Who I am
Layered generation upon generation

Layers of geology
Lay one upon another
Archaeology boring down
Exploring each layer

Piecing together history
Secrets that glare
No long hidden
Brought to light of day

Freedom in the light
Don't have to fade
If live a life of love
Loving well walking in Truth

Memories float
Like cotton off cottonwood
Air thick with memories
Moments and events of formation

In twilight moments of life
Not too late for redemption
Periptery of legacy still possible
Transformation in the end

Unspoken spoken
Splitting hardened hearts
Reconciliation like honey
Binding fault lines together

Love breaking through
Displacing bitter resentment
Hearts at peace
Pieces puzzled together

Stain glass of family
Put together in artistic joy
Playing with light
Colors of truth prism'd together

God's bigger than brokenness
Making right all that's not
Trusting He'll deliver
In fullness of time restoration

Unrecognizable

            Unrecognizable

When dreams come crashing down
You find your face bent low to the ground
Hope's been shattered
Don't know if you can go on

Wishing to be invisible
Unrecognizable on the inside
Adversity consumes all that's been
Foundation's crumbled in the heat

When day after day re-live the events
Ashes scattered, long gone cold
Burnt up memories residue
Sorrow cloaks heart once bright

When can't see what can be
Darkness plunges over mind
Let go and be swept away
When fully lost can truly be found

Out of the ashes rise
What was lost now found
Mettle tested and tried
Dead skin of doubt sluffs off

All the loss redeemed
Resurrection after depth of tomb
Unrecognizable on the inside
True image displayed
Face to face eye to eye

Inspired by a quote I heard by Bill Johnson, "don't waste your pain."

No More Fury

           No More Fury

Sins burnt up
In the fiery hell
Purified

Where sin once resided
Memories released in smoke
Holy ashes remain

Dark smoke released
Flame licking the sky
No more fuel to feed

Smoldering days
Glowing coals at night
No more fury to ignite

Cleared of the pain
Free of debris
New foundations lay
