Gray Clouds

Gray Clouds

Dirty gray clouds
as smoke stained walls
gloom hangs thick
Spring stolen away

Snud, snow and mud
glom onto boots
a Winter zephyr
scurries through

Green blossoms cloaked
thick in soft white
prairie weather unpredictable
as bask in afterglow of storm

Psalm 19-120A

Psalm 19-120A

Wake this morning wanting
  more of You
  empty space longing
  for Your tender touch

A breath of Your presence
  upon my cheek
  knowing You're close
  soothes my anxious heart

Sweet surrender into Your arms
  lost in giving and receiving
  comfort so desperately need
  found in Your loving eyes

Virdant Prairie

Virdant Prairie

Dawn hugs low
  long shadows of Spring
Rich green pastures
  shimmers in young light

Old Oaks

Old Oaks

Bark callous and thick
deep ridges of course skin
sloughs off confirms death
budless branches stand stark

Once young and tender
pliable in fierce winds
now arthritic and stiff
totters to stay upright

Roots once gripped strong
now let go adrift in soil
unmoored stands at angle
old oaks fall hard

Liminal

Liminal

Somberness oozes out
  memories blend cause such doubt
Unnecessary suffering runs deep
in liminal space between wake and sleep

Buried

Buried

Clanks and rumbles rises next door
memories bulldozed down
dilapidated farm flattened
back into the prairie

Softness

Softness

In gray moment before wake soft memories cuddle
peace washes with desire in morning dews renewal

infused with warm hope of rest in her loving arms
floating upon buoyant grace drifting freely in joy's depth

humbled by your mercy's tenderness like a father's embrace
overcome with your kindness safe as a child resting upon mother's breast

to know and be known secure in who we are as lover and beloved

At Sunrise

Fall's brown brush
paints North Platte River escarpment
clouds mauve and gray
against aqua blue sky

Touch of snow
frosty's coat
reminding seasons change
beckons renewal

Clarity as look out
cool wind caresses
soft flesh cheeky rouge
canvas changes as sun rises

Silenced Inner Critic

Pen loosens in hand
  mind relaxes
spilling words
  mental spring discharged

Processing and sorting
  culling the day
lessons learned filed
  shared inner critic's notes

To create again
  upon recycled chaff
'til inner critic
  no longer takes notes

Father's

Father's love

Christ in me

Inrush

Power's inrush
  surge magnetizing core
    ushering light
      displacing darkness
        powering family

Ugly Cold

Ugly Cold

They move gracefully
  pausing as we watch
  four deer measure me up
as I soak their beauty in

An ugly cold
  softened by elegance
  as they move off
  leaping the electric fence

As quickly as they appeared
  they disappear into brown grass
  before sun breaks the horizon
  invisible once again

Words crawl off the page
ink floods the wells of eyes
stains the mind

Paints tired images
shadow memories
redrawn gray matter

Resistance

Resistance

One of those mornings of resistance
where don't want to sit down and write
because of what I might discover
beneath heartache what'll be uncovered

Heart aches in place of trust
that faith is all that binds us
strands so damaged from all the years
Value's been wrapped away in fear

Heart droplets of tears
drip ruby red clear
wondering if we'll ever be free
to love as created to be

Sulk

Sulk

Drizzle's rhythm upon decaying corn stalks
  solitude envelops stillness
  water beads on duster
  heart warm in November's chill

Gray clouds hover close
  transition soon enough to snow
  melancholy mood rests on prairie
  high plains of Nebraska sulk

  everything loose

Tumble with me

Silence

Silence

Silence creeps into me
  settles in anxious place
  as if jittery caffeine
  floods warmth within me

Silence washes
  bleaches stained mind
  renews my hearts
  restores my soul

Silence allows me
  to hear beauty
  babbling streams
  quiets busy thoughts

Silence sharpens vison
  to see sharper
  further into heart
  fog lifts in light's warmth

Silence tears down my
  my walls
  one anxious
  block at a time

Silence invites peace
  baptizes in joy
  cleanses shame
  new flesh's raw beauty

Thoughts collect as dew upon
  blades of prairie grass
Soft sunrise graces
  with fleshy peach sky
Each moment a kaleidoscope of colors
  feathery rose petal reds
Merge into a succulent
  raspberry horizon

Blossom's Nectar

Blossom's Nectar

Prairie sky etch palettes of pinks and blues upon my canvas
reminding of all things beautiful to be grateful for

When Winter yields to Spring and green blades pierce up from soil
brown soon yields its cloak to alfalfa blossoms

Life drawn to the buds drinking in purple nectar's mead
drunk on beauty before heat of Summer stifles or Autumn strips bare

Squalls

Squall

         -i-
Upon the eastern sky
   of a Nebraska 'eve
Patchwork of rain squalls
rainbow's arch creases upon pale blue

        -ii-
Upon the eastern sky
   wash away the pain
Broken hearts cry
   heavy is the stain

        -iii-
Upon the eastern sky
   droplets pock the ground
Tears mix in bloodshot eyes
   heart sporadically pounds

        -iv-
Upon the eastern sky
   all the memories fly
Purging out the sepsis of trauma
   cleansing that integrates my soul
