Show Time

Show Time (18-058Z)

Ink stains the page
Tear drops of the heart
Years of pent up rage
Now a fresh start

Past is not the gage
No longer pay the wage
Free from cage
Curtain call new stage

Back

Back 18-056Z

Go back to the beginning
When first love bubbled fresh
Bring Him all the history

From a life lived
Places broken, hope lost
Pieces scattered

Return to the start
Place of the heart
Restores the fractured parts

Wash

Wash (18-054Z)

Tsunami of emotions
crash into the day
unexpected news
waves of memories rise

Let them pass
rolling through in sets
rise and fall with them
allow the moment

Peace comes in time
calmness returns
as sunset dazzles
western horizon ablaze

Chills

Chills (18-051Z)

clear sky
western horizon reddish orange
as sun dips below earths edge

bitter chill falls
like the setting sun
'til darkness chills the bones

Nebraska Nor'easter

Nebraska Nor'easter (18-045B)

Warmth of day collides
Winter relents
Wind howls in resistance
Spring will not yet come

Geese fight with season
Wings flapping
Yet each stroke offers little
As I watch them

Sailor like struggle
A Nebraska Nor'easter
Pushing against all
Animate and inanimate

Bear

Our Dog Bear

Bear (17-325C)

As I open the door
A wave of grief meets me
No Bear to greet me
As I enter the garage

Pilot looking with lonely eyes
She knows Bear won't be back
We grieve a few minutes together
Mutual comfort, then move forward

A heart of gratitude for final moments
Sitting petting Bear in the brilliant sun
On a very warm Novembers morn
As I mourn in his final hours

Memories remain to mix
Together with joy and gratitude
For times we shared over fourteen years
And hope of the day when all things made new

Reminder to love well
To hold those I love loosely
To express my heart in the present
No guarantee for another breath

Sorrow and grief will recede
No longer need to carry the trauma
Placing life, times, who and what I love
In Father's hands with praise on my lips

Moments where enemy wants to plant
Seeds of accusation at Father
Same old scheme and now
I will not take the bait

I will offer praise to Father
Brings Him pleasure to be real
And worship in the midst of pain
He lifts the suffering, His peace settles

It is always hard when having to let go of a pet when he has been part of life for such a long time. We had to put Bear down last November.

Temple

Temple (17-342A)

In darkness before dawn
wind rushes loudly
Change of pressure
relentless gale follows

Surrendering self to pressure
yielding to conviction's call
Internal weather shifts
cleansing of my sanctuary

Expected More

Expected More (18-031Y)

Blood red blue moon
Hidden in the clouds
Disappointed didn't see you
Went out of way to watch

Chose to veil yourself
A lover unseen
Out of sight
Out of touch

Heart chills
Space is lonely
Coldness settle
Into the bones

About the Author:  Brian Bucks lives on a small horse ranch in Western Nebraska and is a husband, father, electrical engineer, and poet. (18-031Y)

About the disappointment of overcast skies on 1/31/18 and unable to see the lunar eclipse.

Choice

Choice (18-043Z)

groggily slide out of bed
put on sweats, hat, and gloves
eight above in darkness
turn garage light on

where my bike sits
resting on its Winter stand
resistance waiting for me
twenty five minutes in stationary land

shed the stocking cap
then the hoodie
next the gloves
heart rate climbs

forgot how much better I feel
after legs have spun the wheel
earbuds feed me music
takes me away to peaceful place

no navel gazing
revitalizes body
purges the soul
quiets the mind

when thoughts arise
throw them out
not at this time
intentional refreshing

Sepia

Scotts Bluff National Monument 2/9/18

Sepia (18-042Z)

Old things let go 'n die

New life together share
Sepia tones in sky
Restfully soak 'n stare

Purity graces sky
Drifting in air
Nourish all that's dry
Dusky moment stares

Monument reflects in eyes
Inside hope flares
Awe inspires cry
Invitation's dare

Gray Matter

Gray Matter (18-034Z)

evening settles
day titrated

few concentrated drops
register in memory

word spoken
interpret tone

pain drip
from pursed lips

impact splatters
upon gray matter

neither known
bitterness sown

stay internally solid
break the routine

make a bid
stay vulnerable

be seen

Quietness

Quietness (16-231Z)

A new quietness,
Son is away
Hole in our home,
Empty space.

Transition of launching,
Letting go,
Allow the space,
God fills that place.

Coyote

Coyote (18-037Z)

Rustle in the scrub
Molly's ears perk up
Coyote bounds ten yards away
Crossing in front of us

Pulling hard
Taut leash
Excited energy
Restrained from chase

Taffy

Taffy (18-037Y)

Tension of taffy
Strained love
Pulled here
Stretched there

On display
All see
The tugging
'Til malleable

Ever softening
Two becoming one
Fused together
In heat of stretching

'Til colors woven
In sweetness
Sticks to teeth
Lips lock

Fractured

Fractured (18-033Z)

mirror shards scattered
fragmented image
reflects back at me
dystopian person

can't integrate
empty eyes
stare back from
fractured liminal space

sweep up the distortions
who once was
reverent and holy honor
as put to rest

no longer need
to believe these lies
congruent and aligned
a new day and new hope
