Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

rhythm of season
sun's angle low
further south
cool shadows

change lingers
in dormancy
buried in warmth
below the surface

waits for warmth
in cocoon of hope
that spring will come
green shoots pierce earth

Winter Solitude

Winter Solitude

Horizon shrouded with bluish gray clouds
shadows as I walk this morning
Horse outlines appear before me
  grazing in fields now dormant

Bites

Bites

Coldness bites
  locks its jaw
Teeth pierce sharp
  crushing bone

Wind drives deep
  under layers of clothes
An unwelcomed guest
  reluctantly leaves

Warmth returns

Melodic Icing

Melodic Icing

Meadowlark songs
 usher in autumn
First hard freeze
 coated white with frost
Yet they're still here
 singing their melodies

Fall Snow Upon High Plains

Fall Snow Upon High Plains

dawn's glow festers
prismatic light
reflects upon ice
nostrils flare
exhale frosty breath
canter briskly
mane dances
tail held proud

Renewal

Renewal

Aspen limbs arch
canopy of golden leaves
over abandoned road

Ponderosa pine forewarn
can hear it coming
in the crowns

With each gust
quivering shakes free
flaxen leaves flutters down

I alone watch
intruder in this world
awestruck in solitude

Rest upon a rock
eat my sandwich
drink in honey colors

Beauty awakens
dormant longings
restores hope

Nebraska Nor'easter

Nebraska Nor'easter (18-045B)

Warmth of day collides
Winter relents
Wind howls in resistance
Spring will not yet come

Geese fight with season
Wings flapping
Yet each stroke offers little
As I watch them

Sailor like struggle
A Nebraska Nor'easter
Pushing against all
Animate and inanimate

Last Day of the Season

Last Day of the Season

Sounds of life fill the air
Whistles of referees
Sounds of kids voices
In excitement of game

Green fields at the end of October
Thump of soccer ball kicked
Sporadic cheers of parents erupt
Red and neon green flags at the corners stiff in the wind

Fields become quiet
Only four teams remain
All the age groups gone
Except the oldest age division

Coolness drifts onto the field
Sun grows low on horizon
Breeze chills the players
Parents huddle to stay warm

Then it is over
Another season drawn to a close
Disperse quickly in fading light
Cleats and shin guards put away

Insulated

                    Insulated

Sullen sky hides the sinking sun
Gray clouds cast gloom
Sowing disappointment in the air

Coolness of a Nebraska October day
Schizophrenic day between hot and cold
Stealing green and leaves from the living

Resignation falls like a winter coat
Insulated from season's bitterness
Darkness falls earlier now
