Steppes

Steppes

Small Wyoming town
windswept steppe
at the edge the high plains of the East
snow covered peaks to the West

Gusts attempt to rip from frame
grabs the doors firm
a day of interstate warnings
high winds no large profile vehicles

Nebraska Nor'easter

Nebraska Nor'easter (18-045B)

Warmth of day collides
Winter relents
Wind howls in resistance
Spring will not yet come

Geese fight with season
Wings flapping
Yet each stroke offers little
As I watch them

Sailor like struggle
A Nebraska Nor'easter
Pushing against all
Animate and inanimate

Tumbleweed Sprint

            Tumbleweed Sprint

Harsh clouds race low on horizon

Grey look of snow

Longing for sun to break through

Grit fills the air

Wind surges pelting windows

Small debris peppers exposed skin

Brown corn stubble catches on fences

Tumbleweeds sprint across the fields

Beech and Elm

              Beech and Elm

Wind surges like the surf
Pounding as breaks upon beech and elm
In sets of waves the wind cycles
Gusting warmth over Winter's snowy remnants

Trickling of water in rivulets
Dripping as ice yields swiftly
Wind lustfully drinks
Robbing rivulets of reaching river

Creativity

        Creativity

Rustling of tall grass
Leaves and tumble weeds scoot past
As sun sinks gust subside

A day outside is better than any day in the office
Just a few moments at dusk
Washes all the slime away

Creativity comes easy
In open spaces
In open places

Wind's Caress

Wind's Caress

Wind caresses my skin
Hair on arms feel its light touch
Like lips softness teasing
Seducing in the warm light

Arouses loving memories
Awakens hopefulness of what can be
Beauty wraps mind
Pulling me close

Submerged in warmth
Rays of love illuminate
Colors of autumn
Seasons of intimacy

End of Day

               End of Day

End of the day and wind must howl,
One's spirit grows foul.
All of the wind tests one's nerve,
Easy to distract, redirect and swerve.

Push and gust makes one huff,
Become agitated and gruff.
Such a beautiful morning at the start,
Each hour that passes mind pricked with dart.

Wind in the ear,
Draws up boiling fear.
Constant gnawing of the bone,
Exposing heart of stone.

Face the wind,
Allow its bend.
Tumbleweeds of soul,
Blown away, uprooted path to whole.

Gusts

                        Gusts

Invisible gusts push van around,
Sways and rocks losing attachment to ground.
Dirt paints invisible,
Makes day miserable.
Western Nebraska's radical temperature shifts,
Carves out landscapes - explore the gifts.
Barren vistas funnel the wind,
Blowing past far behind.

Cold Wind

           Cold Wind
Cold wind caresses face.
Body leans, propped and braced.
Cheeks redden as cool burns.
Direction headed reluctant to turn.
Bite of air, trudge along.
Chill requires motivation strong.
Each inhaled breath creates an ache.
Each exhaled breath leaves a foggy wake.
Eyes water in the breeze.
Squinting narrows vision, tears freeze.
Alive and aware in raw place.
No longer numb from routine, welcome grace.
