Old Oaks
Bark callous and thick
deep ridges of course skin
sloughs off confirms death
budless branches stand stark
Once young and tender
pliable in fierce winds
now arthritic and stiff
totters to stay upright
Roots once gripped strong
now let go adrift in soil
unmoored stands at angle
old oaks fall hard
