Ugly Cold

They move gracefully

  pausing as we watch

  four deer measure me up

  as I soak their beauty in

An ugly cold

  softened by elegance

  as they move off

  leaping the electric fence

As quickly as they appeared

  they disappear into brown grass

  before sun breaks the horizon

  invisible once again

  everything loose

  pull free

  surrender direction

Tumble with me

  across the prairie

  miles of adventure

  contours to explore

Squalls

Squall

         -i-

Upon the eastern sky

   of a Nebraska 'eve

Patchwork of rain squalls

   rainbow's arch creases upon pale blue

        -ii-

Upon the eastern sky

   wash away the pain

Broken hearts cry

   heavy is the stain

        -iii-

Upon the eastern sky

   droplets pock the ground

Tears mix in bloodshot eyes

   heart sporadically pounds

        -iv-

Upon the eastern sky

   all the memories fly

Purging out the sepsis of trauma

   cleansing that integrates my soul

the land lay quiet

now all that's left
