Old Oaks

Old Oaks

Bark callous and thick
deep ridges of course skin
sloughs off confirms death
budless branches stand stark

Once young and tender
pliable in fierce winds
now arthritic and stiff
totters to stay upright

Roots once gripped strong
now let go adrift in soil
unmoored stands at angle
old oaks fall hard

Passing

Passing (18-175y)

Energy dissipates
Each day
Younger passing
Broadcasting "on your left"

Disappearing in distance
Out of sight
'Til next day
repeat again

Now they are on the right
Down the path
Forged over years
Slowly hobble

Solitude

Solitude (16-149Z)

Gray blustery day,
Bound to house.
Confined by body,
Mind fully alive.

Acceptance

     Acceptance

Reality of age
Soaks in soul
Like gently rain drops
On dry soil

Accepting reality
Clears the heart
Like air cleanses
With moist air

He walks
With a cane now
No longer fighting
Body's limitation

He sits
Dozes off
Awake hours in night
Time to be alive
